Relief on the Horizon? Regional NSW Holds Its Breath for Forecast Rain

At James Bradford Rural, we’re seening the direct impact of this dry run on the ground. The lack of moisture hasn’t just affected the feed; it has been the primary driver behind the big yardings we’ve seen across the local selling centers. Many producers have been offloading stock earlier than planned to ease the pressure on disappearing water supplies and thinning paddocks.

The Forecast: What to expect

Meteorologists are finally tracking a shift in the weather pattern, with a trough expected to move through the region across the weekend. While rainfall totals remain patchy and unpredictable - typical of summer storms - the prospect of even 10–20mm offers a much-needed lifeline to help stabilise topsoil and provide a "green pick" for struggling livestock.

What this means for the market

If the forecast delivers, we expect to see a reaction in the saleyards. A decent rainfall event usually results in:

  • Tightening Supply: Producers will likely hold onto remaining stock to capitalise on new growth, leading to a decrease in yarding numbers.
  • Price Support: With more grass in the paddock, restocker confidence typically surges, putting an upward floor on prices for lighter weights.
  • Water Relief: For those relying on dams and tanks, even a short, sharp burst of rain can provide critical runoff to replenish surface water levels.

While we remain cautiously optimistic, we know that summer rain can be a "hit or miss" game.  Use this window to check your rain gauges, ensure your drainage is clear, and keep a close eye on the lightning risk that often accompanies these summer changes.
