Description

It was a fair quality showing, made up predominantly of yearling and weaner cattle, with only limited pens of prime cattle on offer. While most of the major buyers were at the rail, the overall market trended cheaper today.

Here’s a breakdown of how the key categories performed:

  • Trade & Feeders: Prime yearling cattle to the trade topped at 544c/kg. Yearling steers to feed eased by 15c, finding a range of 538c to 650c/kg. Yearling heifers to feed were considerably cheaper, landing between 486c and 580c/kg (with a 555c/kg average).

  • Restockers: Light steers heading back to the paddock showed improved quality, making 534c to 645c/kg (averaging 604c/kg). Light heifers held firm, topping at 578c/kg and averaging 545c/kg.

  • Grown Cattle & Cows: Prime grown cattle to processors topped at 440c/kg. Score 2 and 3 cows saw an improvement in quality to make 366c to 390c/kg. Heavy, 4-score prime cows eased by 5c, trading from 390c to 415c/kg, while the best of the bulls reached 391c/kg

Numbers bounced back strongly in Gunnedah this week, with 1,643 cattle yarded an increase of 690 head from last week. It was another high-quality yarding dominated by yearling and weaner cattle. All the major buyers were at the rail and competing hard, driving a mostly dearer market across the board.
