Gunnedah bounces back with strong buyer demand and quality lines
After a brief pause last week for system upgrades, Gunnedah saleyards returned with a bang this week. Numbers surged as 2,781 head were scanned which is an impressive 1,500+ head jump on a fortnight ago. The market responded enthusiastically to a refreshed yarding featuring larger lines of quality cattle, with all major buyers present at the rail to drive an overall dearer market.
Restocker demand was a major highlight of the sale. Light restocker heifers led the charge with a sharp 30c gain, making from 480c to 564c/kg, while light steers picked up 8c (and more in places) to reach up to 650c/kg. In the feeder categories, steers under 400kg held firm at 520c to 640c/kg, and feeder heifers edged 3c dearer to average 532c/kg. Heavy feeder steers over 400kg softened slightly by 15c, averaging 551c/kg, while prime trade yearlings found solid support between 448c and 554c/kg.
Grown cattle and breeding stock also saw excellent momentum. Prime grown cattle topped out at 450c/kg, but the cow market stole the show with a broad 20c/kg lift across all scores. Prime 4 score heavyweight cows topped at 430c/kg, and the best of the bulls reached 426c/kg.
With strong competition across every category, it was a fantastic week to return to the yards.
