Project Update: Gunnedah Sale yard Upgrade

If you drive past the Gunnedah Sales yards you should have notice the significant changes in the redevelopment of the Gunnedah Sale yards one of New South Wales’ top livestock selling centres. Hosting over 120,000cattle annually and generating approximately $90 million in sales, the Gunnedah Sale yards have grown into the fifth-largest cattle-selling facility in the state.

Originally built in 1919, the sale yards have long been a key part of the local economy, and the ongoing redevelopment will ensure the facility continues to meet the needs of the region’s farmers, agents, and buyers. The project has moved one step closer to completion with the installation of the extensive new roof, providing crucial protection from the elements for livestock, workers, and buyers alike.

What This Means for Gunnedah and Local Farmers
The upgrade will enhance the functionality and efficiency of the sale yards, ensuring Gunnedah remains a competitive and attractive destination for live stock sales. For local farmers and selling agents, the new infrastructure will improve cattle handling, creating a safer and more streamlined experience for all. By providing modern, weather-protected facilities, the upgrade will also help attract more buyers and increase sales potential, benefiting the entire local economy.

Gunnedah Shire Council is committed to supporting the agricultural sector, and this sale yard redevelopment is a key part of ensuring the long-term sustainability and success of Gunnedah’s rural community.

“The Gunnedah Sale yards have been a cornerstone of our agricultural industry for more than a century, and this upgrade reflects our commitment to supporting our local farmers and ensuring the future success of our livestock selling centre,” said James Bradford from James Bradford Rural.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2025, with the new roof installation marking one of the final stages of the redevelopment. Gunnedah’s farmers and agents are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as the project nears completion.
